Psoriasis is a chronic,inflammatory and autoimmune hyperproliferative skin disease.It is a non-contagious disease which is characterised by gray or silvery flaky patches on the skin which is red and inflamed underneath when scratched, it usually affects extensor surfaces and scalp,follows a recurrent pattern.

It’s origin and development are multifaceted and are hinged with much significance to genetic and environmental factors.
=> Genetic factors
With great accelerations in modern medicine,there has been identification of several genes which has been linked to psoriasis.The most replicated gene is PSORS1,located within the major histocompatibility complex(MHC) on chromosome 6 (human leucocyte antigen(HLA)Cw6) and encoding an epidermal protein,corneodesmosin.This gene accounts for almost half of the heritability of psoriasis.

1) Infections: B-hemolytic streptococcal throat infections or skin infections often precedes guttate psoriasis.It could also be the initial presentation of HIV infection.

2)Weather conditions such as dry conditions can cause kobnerisation at sites of sunburn or polymorphic light eruption.

3) Smoking and exposure to second hand smoke

4) Anxiety and Stress can also aggravate psoriasis.

5) Skin injuries such as a cut or scrape, a bug bite,severe sunburn.

-Silver,white scale is evident and significant when surface is scraped,especially on the scalp,nails,palms, axillary and submammary folds and soles.
-About 10% of patients with psoriasis develop an inflammatory arthropathy,which can take on different patterns.

One way to manage this is by first reassuring the individuals with psoriasis as this is not a life-threatening disease.Topical agents like emollients,tars,dithranol, Vit D agonists as well as retinoids and corticosteroids.
