Based on a True Life Story…

Marie recently got divorced by her husband of eighteen years. After the efforts she put in trying to save her marriage,it left her devastated. The emotional distress she faced in the marriage had sapped out every iota of self confidence in her. She had undergone several therapy sessions, all to no avail. To her, she felt with the kind of body she had and the fact that her husband had left her for another younger woman, that she couldn’t find true love again. As a last option, she was considering going for cosmetic surgery possibly to feel alive again. What’s your opinion? Do you think it’s going to help out?

In our world today, it’s not news to wake up one morning to see that your favourite celebrity has gone under the knife to get a more beautiful appearance, probably on their face or body. You know the story isn’t complete if i don’t talk about the well known kardashians,Nicki Minaj, Cardi B and other favourites to mention just a few of them.

Initially, this has always sparked a negative reaction from the public especially amongst fans. But then,if we’re to look at the reasons why they did that, it could be to boost their self esteem and confidence (…just saying).

Over time, people have gotten used to this, and even gone behind too (yeah!) to have theirs’ done. Now,it seems like it’s no longer a big deal anymore. Sounds more like anytime you want it,you can always get it at the snap of your fingers… lol..don’t mind me anyways. The big question is this:

Contrary to the message it’s name carries (plastic), it’s a broad specialty in surgery that involves the restoration, reshaping, reconstruction, repair or alteration of the human body. Let’s leave it like this for now.

The term Plastic Surgery comes from the Greek word plastike (teckhne) or the art of modeling or sculpting. The profession dates back to approximately 800 BC in India where forehead flaps were utilized to reconstruct amputated noses.

The phrase, ‘Plastic Surgery’ as commonly used is a MISNOMER.

Yes! Is it surprising?

Plastic Surgery is not a purely aesthetic procedure. Let’s make this clear.

The word, Plastic Surgery covers two subspecialties:

Reconstructive Surgery
Cosmetic Surgery

Reconstructive Surgery is done to ‘reconstruct’ a part of the body usually for the purpose of repair after an accident or disease or birth defect. The goal here is to improve the functioning of the body part repaired.

For instance, a middle aged lady who is suffering from breast cancer,in order to be treated,a mastectomy is done. For better appearance, a reconstructive surgery can be carried out in response to the mastectomy,so she can appear normal.

Here are examples of Reconstructive Surgery/Procedures:

Breast Reconstruction

Burn Repair Surgery

Congenital Defect Repair: Cleft Palate, Extremity Defect Repair,Hypospadias, Epispadias.

Lower Extremity Reconstruction

Hand Surgery

Craniofacial Surgery

Reattachment of amputated digits

Scar Revision Surgery

Cosmetic Surgery, on the other hand, is not considered medically necessary, it’s an aesthetic procedure done to enhance the human appearance. It is an elective type of plastic surgery that improves body appearance, for beautifying purposes (not correctional)

The procedures, techniques, and principles of cosmetic surgery are entirely focused on enhancing a patient’s appearance. Improving aesthetic appeal, symmetry, and proportion are the key goals.

An aesthetic surgery can be performed on all areas of the head, neck, and body. Since cosmetic procedures treat areas that function properly, cosmetic surgery is designated as elective. Cosmetic elective procedures are performed by doctors from a variety of medical fields, including plastic surgeons.

But then note this ; all cosmetic surgeons are plastic surgeons. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is the leading US authority on cosmetic surgery. This is their take on the topic:

While both cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery deal with improving a patient’s body, the overarching philosophies guiding the training, research, and goals for patient outcomes are different.

Below are types of Cosmetic Surgery Procedures:

Breast Enhancement: Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction

Facial Contouring: Rhinoplasty, Chin, or Cheek Enhancement

Facial Rejuvenation: Facelift, Eyelid Lift, Neck Lift, Brow Lift

Body Contouring: Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, Gynecomastia Treatment

Skin Rejuvenation: Laser Resurfacing, Botox®, Filler Treatments

If you’ve always thought cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery were one in the same, you’re not alone. A significant number of plastic surgeons choose to focus their practice on cosmetic surgery, and as such, the terms are often used interchangeably. But this is not technically correct. Cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are closely related specialties, but they are not the same.

Cosmetic ( Plastic) Surgery when done by a skilled surgeon, has little or no complications to it.

Cosmetic Surgery like any type of surgery is not without risks. But when done by a specialist with expertise,it’s benefit to risk ratio becomes high,in other words, the outcome is very satisfactory with very low risk of complications.

Taking an example by looking at the surgery with a high risk of complications, which is Brazillian Butt Lift (BBLs). It can be life threatening especially if the fat is placed incorrectly into or below the muscle area, it can cause a pulmonary fat embolism (PFE), in which the fat cells infiltrate the circulatory system and travel into the heart and lungs, and it can result in immediate death.

In 2017, BBL had significantly higher mortality rates than any other cosmetic surgery at that time. A year later, the ASERF issued guidelines to improve surgery safety, which include warnings to place fat only in the skin layer instead of the muscle.

Although the mortality rate has since dropped among BBLs conducted by board-certified plastic surgeons, some surgeons can practice without proper training or qualifications, according to Vox. So a very common question usually asked is ‘Where in the World can I get the Best Plastic Surgery?’ To know about this, check here.

It has no age or gender barrier.

It’s another misconception to think that only young people can go for cosmetic surgery or that only elderly/advanced individuals can opt for it. Well, that belief needs to be ruled out as anyone that meets the surgical criteria for undergoing aesthetics can go for it.

Another belief that women are the only ones opting for cosmetic surgery is very false. Studies carried out lately have proven that there’s an increasing percentage of men going for cosmetic surgery. Obviously, it may not be a BBL(lol…), possibly rhinoplasty (nose job), tummy tuck, etc.

Before continuing,as a side note, with the increased use of beautifying apps like Snapchat, Face tune, etc; the demand for cosmetic surgery has been on the rise and it’s most likely going to stay. People who may feel insecure about their face or body do that to elevate their self confidence.

Now,Doctors take a counselling session to know the reasons why individuals want to go for cosmetic surgery. And a greater percentage of persons who have undergone it have been found to have a psychological issue known as ‘Body Dysmorphic Disorder’. It happens when a person just doesn’t feel right about his or body and needs some corrections or enhancements done on it.

Now just in case you didn’t know as well;

Plastic surgery is not completely scar free.

Like all surgeries, plastic surgery too leaves behind scars. However, plastic surgeons are skilled at not only minimizing but also hiding the scars effectively. For example, when a facelift is done, the scar is hidden around the ear area where it is less noticeable. Scars are also hidden among wrinkles so that it gives a natural appearance.
